Computer covers protect your computer from dust, dirt and grime.  Dust is common in the home, office and workshop. The best protection other than eliminating the source of the problem is to use computer covers. Some covers are very breathable, and are designed to be left on the computer equipment while it is running.

Although some computers have an inlet dust filter, computer covers offer protection for both the inside and outside of the equipment. 

There are a variety of computer covers on the market.  Most traditional covers are either plastic or vinyl.  Modern PC covers, like the ShopShield from Computer Dust Solutions or the Dirt Bag from Dirt Bag, Inc are made of a highly porous material, allowing the computer to be properly cooled while it’s being protected from dust and dirt.  The construction is a form of sleeve made to fit just about any size of computer unit.  They can be installed in a matter of minutes and do not require you to limit your use of the computer in most cases.  These sleeve-style PC covers block dust and dirt from entering the computer from the many ventilation passages that can be found in the front, back, sides, and even the top of most computer units.   Breathable monitor covers and printer covers are also available. As you’d expect, printers and monitors are are very susceptible to dust and dirt infiltration, so full-time protection is essential to extending your equipment life.

Dust covers for computers are inexpensive .  Most dust or dirt can be wiped, shaken, or vacuumed from the computer cover surface.  This is most common for computer monitor covers where visibility is important.  Keyboard dust covers are also necessary, and several models allow for leaving the cover installed while typing.

PC covers are often employed in industrial situations where dust and dirt can reduce the reliability and life of the computer.  Critical computers components that are exposed to dust and dirt, especially mechanical components like the keyboard and CD-ROM can cease to operate without warning, and many times cannot be fixed once damaged by these contaminants.

Machine shops, wood shops and home workshops often have computers needing protection.  Wood dust from sawing and metal dust from grinding can wreak havoc on sensitive computer electronics. Studies have shown that wood dust can infiltrate an unprotected computer in a matter of days, causing it to overheat. Metal dust can cause circuits to short-out, introducing a new workshop hazard. PC covers can do a lot to mitigate these issues.

Covering a computer can also protect it from spills and sprayed liquids, such as in a paint-shop area.  These pollutants in airborne liquid form can cause corrosion and premature failure of vital computer components, particularly optical surfaces such as on the computer monitor or inside the DVD drive.   Investing in a computer cover can ensure that your computer equipment will operate when you need it to and will not wear out before it’s time.

Whether you decide to use a traditional plastic or vinyl computer cover or one of the modern breathable computer covers, you will be doing what is necessary to assure that your computer will be operational when you need it.
